Rock Island Sandown Layout — August Update
Early August, 2026: Extended the layout from 96×48 inches to 106×52 inches by gluing the unused large Woodland Scenics risers around the outside. I then laid plaster cloth over aluminum kitchen foil to create a mountain background. Painted with an Umber wash. More paint and vegetation to follow. Decided to create the mountain range before laying track – a good idea as it avoided having to protect the track. I also installed Cooch rock walls against the risers.
Mid August, 2026: Started to re-lay the Kato Unitrack.
Late August, 2026: Finished re-laying the Kato Unitrack. Next job – punching holes for the turnout wires, then track wiring and testing. If ok it will then be time to glue down the track and to start ballasting.
