AT&SF Chico

According to Trackside around Denver 1955-1979 with Jim Ozment by Thomas C Brunner (2010, Morning Sun Books) in September 1968 the Chico would have left DUT as train 191 (westbound odd number) around 4pm. The train would then leave Pueblo as train 190 (eastbound even number) a little after 6pm to meet the estbound SUPER CHIEF train 18 that departed from La Junta at 8:30pm.

It would return as train 201 to Pueblo and then 200 on to Denver, arriving about midnight.

However, Forrest & Albi's, Denver's Railroads, (1981, Colorado Railroad Museum) details the proposed operations plan for DUT, effective June 15, 1947, and lists the following AT&SF movements:

TIME ARR/DEP TRAIN NO TRACK
7:50am Arrival         130 (westbound) 6
1:15pm Departure    101 (eastbound) 6
2:00pm Arrival         90 (westbound) 6
7:50PM Departure    141 (eastbound) 6

The 2pm arrival time of weastbound train number 90 agrees with the following 1948 timetable for the "Chief" from Chigago. However the timetable does not show the "Chief" meeting a train from Denver. Given that the journey would take around 5 hours the train would have needed to depart DUT by 11:30am.

Chico Consist

Photographs (see Colorful Colorado Railroads In The 1960's, Ronald C. Hill, 1992, Colorado Railroad Museum and Trackside around Denver 1955-1979 with Jim Ozment, Thomas C Brunner, 2010, Morning Sun Books) indicate that the normal "Chico" consist included:
  • Either a single EMD E8m or an EMD F7 locomotive
  • 2 Baggage cars
  • 1 Coach
  • 1 Sleeper:
    • Sleeper Citrus Valley (6 sections, 6 roomettes, 4 double bedrooms) (ran from Chicago, Illinois — Denver, Colorado; switched out at La Junta, Colorado)
    • Sleeper Estancia Valley (6 sections, 6 roomettes, 4 double bedrooms) (ran from Denver, Colorado — Los Angeles, California; switched in at La Junta, Colorado)
